Baby sparrow, when we first got her
.
.
Feed cups come in handy for nest boxes too... who would have thought...
See how big I am getting. I have learned to fly now. I learned to fly in just one week of being here. As soon as I learn to eat seeds. I will get to go free outside.... I can not wait for my big day.Update 6-1-03The baby is now starting to eat seeds. YEA!!!
I have discovered the baby will do a cute little wiggle dance. I call it the feed me dance. It fluffs it's feathers up and shakes his little back side when she thinks it is time to eat.... it's like she is just so excited that we are feeding her, she just can not wait to get that first bite of food. Now she is even chirping while I feed her...........She has also started to make a little cooing noise sometimes. She is so cute. This is an experience that has been very enjoyable. I never realized they developed so fast. I make a certain little whistle sound and she will start chirping right back to me like she is talking. She also answers to the dogs squeaky toy. She stays out side when we are outside during the day and she gets to see and talk to the other birds. She has been a delight. She knows the Sparrows are her family she does a lot more talking when she hears them.06-07-03

The baby started drinking water from the water cup yesterday. I saw her take a bath today for the first time. She eats about every 2 hours, but today she went a little longer in between feedings and ate more seeds. She spends her days in a bird cage hung outside our front door so she can watch and talk to the other birds that come to eat from our feeders in our trees. When I have to go to town and the other family members feed her they say she eats about every hour. The next day she is like that with me and wants to eat more often but eats less at a time. I think she just wants to make sure I am still here...LOL I got a call the other day at town and was asked where is that birdies mommy.......LOL ....I had to say on my way home. 7-16-03 Update on the bird.

She is still eating formula. The baby birds must be warm before they eat or they will not digest their food. She is on Exact Bird Formula. I warm the formula to be just a luke warm only, do not get the formula to hot or it will burn the baby. Care must be taken not to give her the feed to fast or too much at a time or she can choke or you can fill her lungs with the formula. I do not give her any water other than in her water cup and formula. She gets plenty of water in the formula at her young age .She has cut down some on the formula. I feed her about every 3 hours now. She is eating some seeds. She loves the millet stick , the seeds are about the right size for the baby. She is not eating the seeds well enough to make it on her own yet so it may be a couple more weeks before she is set free. Today the heat seemed to be a little hard on her so she was brought in the house where it was a little cooler in the afternoon ( No A/C) I am trying to keep her adjusted to the temperature outside the best I can .....I know she will have to live out in it when she is set free.
Up date on 7-7-03
Today this little bird was set free. I hope you enjoy the last pictures of her.

Get ready, get set ...............................................................................................GO!!!!!

Today was my big day. The baby was ready to leave the cage today. We opened the cage door and waited two hours for her to come out and she did nothing. We decided to put the millet seeds on the outside by the door because she just loves the millet seeds. After waiting another hour she finally came out. She stayed around the cage for about 20 min. Then she decided to take her first flight. She flew to the tree in the yard. Then she went to one of the neighbors trees. She went around the neighborhood and came back home. When she was ready to come home she was sure peeping so I whistled back at her and she found her way back to the food...... I think she has a friend already... One tuckered out little bird at the end of the day. We have left her cage out for her and she can come and go until she is ready to leave. I will continue to put seeds and fresh water in her cage until I see no signs of her coming back for a while. We will miss her but I know she will be one happy little girl. We are so thankful we kept her alive until she was ready to go on her own.
UPDATE 8/26/03She has learned to get on the feeders pretty good now.Our little girl is still coming to our yard to eat, She has a nice little friend now that always comes in with her. She lets me know when she is out there if I am outside by trying to get as close to me as she can and she just talks away to me, like she is telling me all about her day. She always comes home when there is a storm and cries outside until I go out and talk to her and let her know it is ok. She calms down after I go out to talk to her. She is so precious.
12/13/03 Update:
The little Sparrow is still coming to eat at our place with some of her friends. She will eat off the platform we put the seed on and will let us know when she is here. She will keep looking in our window to see if we are there. To make sure it is her I will do my special little sound I made with her as a baby and she will look and listen and then talk back ... the rest of the birds just keep eating and ignore it with no reaction. It is so good to see her doing so well with her little friends.
2006
Our little girl is still coming to eat and bringing her children with her. She still remembers the special call we use to talk to her.
